WWJDI: Why would Jesus do it?

Now Jesus summoned His disciples and said “I have compassion on the crowd, because they’ve already stayed with Me three days and have nothing to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry; otherwise they might collapse on the way.” – Matthew 15:32 (HCSB)

Jesus’ ministry to both physical and spiritual needs came from an emotional love for people. Although the ultimate goal of Jesus’ ministry was spiritual, his compassion drove him to see to their physical needs as well.

The word translated “have compassion” literally means yearning bowels. Sounds crazy to us, but in the days of Jesus’ earthly ministry the bowels were seen as the place of emotion. Today we would think of the heart. It was a deep emotional concern for their well being that prompted him to feed them.

Our ministries, both spiritual and physical, must be the same. Not budgets, attendance, bragging rights, or even trying to make up for our shortcomings. God forgive us if our motivation is ever anything but love and compassion. Doing ministry out of compulsion, guilt, fear, or any other reason is not representing Jesus.

“Lord teach us to love as you do that we may serve as you did and join you in your work of redeeming the nations.”
